Dear Friends,

We have recently learned that the Irish government may use money received from an international rescue package to subsidize dog racing and also to explore an expansion of the Irish industry into China!

In 2009, the Bord na gCon, a semi-state body responsible for the control and development of the greyhound industry in Ireland, received €13.6 million in government subsidies. In 2010, it received €11 million. Now, this racing proponent is seeking another €15 million – in part from an EU-IMF bail-out fund intended to help the Irish people. This outrageous use of public funds must be stopped.

For more information, visit the web site of Greyhound Compassion.

Please join us in demanding an end to these subsidies and the proper use of IMF recovery funds.

Email Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny (webmaster@taoiseach.gov.ie) and Minister of Finance Michael Noonan (webmaster@finance.irlgov.ie). Tell them that dog racing is inhumane and the last thing they should be doing is spending public money to prop up a cruel and despicable industry.

Please also take a moment to sign and share our petition at http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-the-bail-out-for-irish-dog-tracks.
I am restoring ciocc bike, I am wondering if the year of the bike might be correct. It has 1969 stamped on the forks. I would like to get it back to original colors or if anyone has some info I would be grateful? Thanks

Dear Friends,

As I'm sure you've noticed, it is the second week of June and we are experiencing extraordinary levels of heat. Our hundreds of homeless people have limited access to water - even more limited this year than last since only 130 can enter St. Francis House and avail themselves of lunch time beverages. I always keep bottled water in the Home Van frig but no one is coming by, because it is just too much to walk through this level of heat. This is a life-threatening situation for our homeless friends.

Here is what we need to do as a community - bring cases of wataer, and even styrofoam coolers of ice, out to homeless areas, and carry bottled water in our cars to give to homeless people we may see as we drive around town. I often hear from people that they are aware of homeless people living near them. You can leave a case of water just past the tree line in such an area and they will find it. If you aren't sure where they are, and you see a Publix-type bag tied to a tree, that's a clue. Homeless folks sometimes mark their entrances to the woods in this way, since finding the entrance can be hard after dark. The Williston Road camp is off a fire trail just before you get to the intersection of Williston Road and SE 16th Street. Other folks are camped along the rails-to-trails bike path within view of the downtown bus terminal (with the permission of the landowner there). There are homeless people behind Winn-Dixie on SW 13th street, and in wooded areas around North Main and 39th Avenue. in wooded areas near the I-75 overpass, off Hawthorne Road, and many other areas.

You can also leave cases of water to Home Van central (307 SE 6th Street - 372-4825). Last week on our driveouts people were asking us for extra water - and we gave out all we had. I like to leave some water by the side of the house in case people come by when we aren't home. The need is almost unlimited. The best deal on water is at Sam's Club. Big Lots on north main often has good deals on water also.

It is going to be a long summer and we need to work together or our homeless friends will be dealing wilth dehydration and heat stroke.

Please email the City Commission and the City Manager and ask them to designate a water truck to bring water to homeless areas. Their email addresses are above in the CC line. Cities across the United States bring water trucks to homeless areas and there is no reason our city can't do this also. We can have a drive to supply homeless folks wilth empty gallon jugs.

The extreme heat, the closing of AGH, and the meal limit at St. Francis House has created an unprecedented emergency in this situation, so let's all pull together.

Love and blessings to you all,

travelling in brazil and buenos aires recently I was wondering why has North America been (generally) more successful than South America? Brazil and Argentina had economic booms... and busts. I think it is because historically N. America has had a more stable and relatively less corrupt government, a strong middle class, strong work and values ethics, creating an infrastructure of trust and opportunity. It is important that the government provide a education , opportunity, a safety net , but at the same time the people should not depend on the government to provide for them.

I have repeatedly heard politicians say that free trade has led to greater prosperity here and abroad. China has become the global factory, Brazil the world's farmer, and India its back office, this is not viable longterm.
Right now we don't have "free" trade, its not "free" when pollution is so bad the olympic athletes were concerned about breathing in Beijing, and green stuff had to be removed for the rowing competition. Its not "free" when we import almost everything and some of our best exports--- movies and software-- are not purchased but copied illegally. What we need is fair and balanced trade.
Limits should be set so that we only buy as much from a country as they buy from us (I mean real products not debt). We should make sure to keep some manufacturing here, we can't just be a country of services. We should make sure that we keep enough hi-tech jobs here to encourage future generations to study science and tech in college.
It is risky to depend on other countries for food, manufacturing , or hi-tech. The philippines used to export rice, now they import it. I think every country should be able to feed itself, at least I want to live in a country that grows enough food to feed itself.
It is wrong when the country's largest employer is walmart, what kind of future does that offer? A country of have's and have nots.
The strength of our country is a strong middle class, a mostly stable incorrupt government, an infrastructure of trust and values, a work ethic, and a future of more than flipping burgers. Did you know appliances sometimes use electricity even when they're turned off? The main culprits are instant-on products with transformers that stay hot. Unplug them or use a power strip. It will save electricity and the appliances will last longer, too.

What about you? Have any cool ideas or brilliant examples? We'd love to hear all about them here.
