Dangerously organic!

It doesn't take much to start a tea production. After 3 years, just 5 plants can supply your family with the occasional pot of tea for a whole year! I have the knowledge to help you get your tea production started, so let me know if you are interested. I am dedicated to making fresh tea available to anyone who wants it (^^).

Let us use this discussion to determine why people would like to produce their own tea and where they are in the country. Where the tea will be grown is a big factor in deciding how to grow your tea, as ideal tea production occurs well below the northern states. This doesn't mean that it is impossible, just takes a bit more work.

So, Aaron... How do you begin doing your own tea production? And, beautiful graphic, that Kitune Pot!

Hi Michael,

Well, first we need to know where you are geographically, and whether you already have your own plants. If not, then that would be the first order of business.

You could ask your local nurseries what sort of options they may have, or check online for options. If you are patient enough, you can report the varietal back to us before purchase and we can discuss options, or you can just pick up something and it will probably make a decent pot.

Depending on your locale, you may need to create some sort of enclosure for the winter months to prevent damage to the branches. Since it is an evergreen, the colder months shouldn't bother it, but damage from the pressure of the snow on the branches can be a serious problem, as can frost in the early spring.

Let us know what you come up with!

Aaron,

We are in Central Florida and do not have any plants, yet.

Sounds like snow shouldn't be a problem for you! Your main concern will be with keeping them well fed and dry. A tea plant requires plenty of nutrition, so I would recommend starting a compost just for them, but this is a bit premature. Let us know if you find any plants that you think might be appropriate.

HI Aaron: Sh'mal here. Where, Seattle? My first winter here, late to start anything, well, not anything, but a tea tree? IN Gainesville I enjoyed mint and lemon grass tea from the community garden plants. I can do that here also. Lemon grass I have to check on. I drink black and green tea daily,, but can black and/or green tea grow in this climate? Can the trees be pruned and kept in containers and brought in in colder weather/ There isn't a lot of snow here, but ocassionally it happens, with ice. That's what Im told. Can they be protected covered with plastic if not to big? So, good to join the tea group. I hope to hear from you. I guess I could check all this out myself, but community efforts help.

Ken Wilber

Wilber's holism:::A key idea of Wilber's is the holon, which came from the writings of Arthur Koestler. He observed that it seems every entity and concept shares a dual nature: as a whole unto itself, and as a part of some other whole. For example, a cell in an organism is a whole and at the same time a part of another whole, the organism. Another example is that a letter is a self-existing entity and simultaneously an integral part of a word, which then is part of a sentence, which is part of a paragraph, which is part of a page; and so on. Everything from quarks to matter to energy to ideas can be looked at in this way...
