Feeding Resistance: Food Not Bombs Members Arrested in Orlando for Serving Meals Without a Permit

Vermont and other States of Mind

Do you think people wake up in the morning and roll over and say "Hey, looks like a sweet way to make a living. I think I'll grab a cardboard and a Magic Marker, make myself a sign and do some begging on a busy street corner today?" Hell no. It's desperation. It sucks...

Wherever You Go There You Are

Book review: Wherever You Go There You Are, by Jon Kabat-Zinn is a good book explaining one man's view of meditation...Meditation can be as simple as you like. Basically, we know meditation is all about clearing our mind for a time. It's hard to not think about anything. So, we search for some guidance. Zinn's book "Wherever You Go There You Are" satisfies me as a well-written, knowledgable guide to understanding and practicing by a degreed MD practitioner who happens to be a clear thinker and writer, too.

Parker - "What Is Poverty?"

You ask me what is poverty? Listen to me. Here I am, dirty, smelly, and with no "proper" underwear on and with the stench of my rotting teeth near you. I will tell you. Listen to me. Listen without pity. I cannot use your pity. Listen with understanding. Put yourself in my dirty, worn out, ill-fitting shoes, and hear me...Others like me are all around you. Look at us with an angry heart, anger that will help.

Kiva is indeed amazing. I can endorse it. I work with Nicaraguan entrepreneur Alejos Antonio Aviles Guillen using Kiva. You can read about my experience here. You can click Alejos's picture below for details.

I have several American friends who work in Nicaragua, including Heather of The Ten Back Collection dot com. Someday soon, I hope to visit Alejos and my friends in Nicaragua.

This is an amazing website: http://www.kiva.org/app.php

I only just found out about it, but it's been going on for a while. It allows you to personally loan money to an individual in the third world, where a pitifully small loan (to us) makes a huge difference in people's lives.

One example: a lady in Peru received $475 for wool and dyes for her family weaving business. You can lend as little as $25 and you can loan it to a specific person. And these are loans, not donations. You get the money back, so you can do it again!

It's one of the best internet ideas I've ever seen.
