Yes, We Have Some Spicy Banana Curry!

Gainesville has a thriving bicycle culture. A while back, we had a get together called Dinner and Bikes. One dish that stood out as both delicious and creative was curried bananas and kale pasta.

Wow, amazing flavor that popped out at you! I went home and made some right away.

Last night, I wanted to make it again but I couldn't find…

A Quick Lesson On Smokers

A great thing happened the other day. I was in Cedar Key in Fred, my camper van. I saw a beautiful smoker out on the curb, waiting for the trash man or some lucky soul with great taste to pick it up. So I did!

My friend Kevin said he'd like it, so I dropped it off yesterday. I sent him the following…

Community Gardening ::: Out with the Old

My patch at the community garden has blessed me and my friends and family with lots of broccoli and salad greens this past season. The collards were abundant and I made use of some, but this season my collard tastebuds weren't as attracted to the leafy green collard buddies I usually befriend.

End of last week I pulled ut the remains of the broccoli and the collard greens.…

Chickpea and Cauliflower Curry

IMG_0663

You've heard me raving about the Chickpea and Cauliflower Curry from Gainesville, FL's Buddha Belly. This is the real McCoy! I can't tell you how many times I've tried to imitate it. I think part of the trick is BB's tempura cauliflower. Anyway, it's delicious. If you look in the Vegetarian Zoo Reading List, you'll see several recipes to try. It's sooooo… Continue

A Great Day at the Garden

Yesterday, I headed up to McRorie Community Garden and had a look at my patch. There were some radishes ready to pick. Thanks to Zoobird Bob Tuskin and his Survivalist seeds for these! I gathered some mint and collard greens, as well.…

The Omnivores Dilemma and Everything Else...

Whenever I begin a blog post with the title "...and Everything Else...", I'm going to do some free associating. So brace yourself.

It's a sunny day here in the Swamp (as I affectionately call Florida, where I live now). Here I am, minding my own business and just piddling around. I really should be outside, riding a cool, red bike I just got. Click the photo below to go to the Bike Zoo and read along with me… Continue

Jalapeño Days at the McRorie Community Garden

There's something about hot peppers, especially jalapeños, that just makes me feel great. It all goes back to my days growing up in the Southwest. Peppers are such a part of the culture in Mexico, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Colorado (to name just a few places) that its impossible to ignore them. You just get involved to one degree or… Continue

Berbere

Ethiopians have exquisite food. It’s more than just nutrition. It’s culture. It’s friendship. And, it tastes great. My Ethiopian friends at The Nile amazed the guests I brought to their restaurant on another visit. My friends couldn’t believe I had only been there once before. We were greeted so warmly. The food was so good. We ate with our right hand, using injera, the pankake like bread made from teff, a nutritious gluten free grain. And, I came… Continue
