Hello, McRorie Gardeners!

Signs of Spring are all around at the garden! I saw this beautiful robin kicking up a dust storm yesterday. The garden is looking so good! I just planted the first few plants for the upcoming season:…

A Great Day at the McRorie Community Garden

Shane gifts me a turnip. Nice!

I dropped by the garden today and took a peek at the lovely plants. That's Shane in the photo above, one of our gardeners, with a turnip. The recent cold weather affected a few. In general, all is well. There are a huge abundance of beautiful, tasty plants in our garden. Click on the photo above to see the set. As for me, I wound up with some tasty mesclun for a salad Christmas eve. I wish…

What's new in Your World? Mine's all about a Bike and a Pond...

Hello, Zoobird! I hope you all are doing well! I thought I'd just throw out some random updates and let you all know how I am doing personally, not from so much a Zoobird standpoint but from a Michael standpoint. Where to begin?

Pond covered with algae

My most exciting news has to do with a new bike ride I've worked into my day. There's a park called Kanapaha nearby and a…

Great Days at the Garden

Hello Zoobird! Yes, here in Gainesville, FL the garden is fine, thanks! I've got lots of plants growing in my patch: my tomatoes, courtesy of Farmer John, are thriving. They have flowered and I'm just waiting for the birds and the bees to do their thing and get the tomatoes going. I planted some spinach and it's doing fine. My biggest challenge is telling sprouts…

Community Gardening ::: Out with the Old

My patch at the community garden has blessed me and my friends and family with lots of broccoli and salad greens this past season. The collards were abundant and I made use of some, but this season my collard tastebuds weren't as attracted to the leafy green collard buddies I usually befriend.

End of last week I pulled ut the remains of the broccoli and the collard greens.…

Springtime at the Garden

Springtime at the McRorie Community Garden

Plants are blooming, bees are buzzing, and all's well at the garden. We made a delicious dinner last night using the florets from our prolific broccoli. This was an easy meal: we sauteed the broccoli florets in a little olive oil, added some garlic and salt and then poured in a little tomato sauce and pre…

A Great Day at McRorie Community Garden

A Great Day at The Garden

Yes, it's that time of year in this brilliant place, Florida. You know what I mean. If you live anywhere that has citrus, you are fully aware of this phenomenon. It's called Spring.

I can remember excitedly telling people that March is the best month to visit Florida. People in California, for example. Funny. People in Chile. Even more…

A Great Day at the Garden!

I went to the garden tonight. What a good time! So many nice things happened. I rode up at dusk and found the garden drenched in the light of the sunset. My mission tonight was simple. I wanted to pick some mint for tea. Mint is dependable. I pulled one strand of the mint, took a look around and saw that the garlic chives were thriving, as always. Troopers! Tomatoes all over the place. Meanwhile, someone visiting the garden said hi. I took a walk around and saw some old… Continue

A Great Day at the Garden!

A Great Day at the Garden

I took a chance and planted sprouts yesterday...

The vendor, a Future Farmer of America student, confidently told me that the frosts were over. I bought 8 Big Boy tomato sprouts, 2 jalapeno and 2 bell pepper sprouts.

Just before Christmas, I planted seeds I'd accumulated from various sources: tomatillo, carrot, sweet cream and okra.… Continue

A Zoobird Intro to Fukuoka Farming

I'm on an iPhone now and will add detail to this post soon, but watch the video please. Kane introduced me to this Fukuoka method. Love it! Will blog about it in detail soon. Sandlewood and Porcelain

A Great Day at the Garden

Another sleepless night

A concrete paradise

Sirens screaming in the heat

Neon cuts the eye

As the jester sighs

At the world beneath his feet

It's a gutter ballet

Just a menagerie

Still the orchestra plays

On a dark and lonely night

To a…

Some Things Are Happening Here

My garden benefactor, Sh'mal

Sh'mal asked me to post this for him. Some of you know him as a social worker, others for his help with the homeless in Gainesville, FL. He managed the McRorie Community Garden for some time. I met him there. I wound up with my patch because he gave his to me. He was moving to Seattle to be… Continue
