Zoma's Sauerkraut
Zoma makes some mighty fine kraut! I just bought some and it's good. It has a light, appealing flavor and it's delicious. I got mine at a local (to Gainesville, FL) place called The Community Co-op, which is a community owned store that does its best to offer high quality, locally…

A Great Day at the McRorie Community Garden
I dropped by the garden today and took a peek at the lovely plants. That's Shane in the photo above, one of our gardeners, with a turnip. The recent cold weather affected a few. In general, all is well. There are a huge abundance of beautiful, tasty plants in our garden. Click on the photo above to see the set. As for me, I wound up with some tasty mesclun for a salad Christmas eve. I wish…

Jamaican Jerk Tofu
Yesterday, I was bummed that I didn't have some ingredients to make Thai sweet chili tofu to go with some delicious brussel sprouts and black rice. Then, it occurred to me that it's been a long time since I had any Jamaican style food.…

Community Gardening ::: Out with the Old
My patch at the community garden has blessed me and my friends and family with lots of broccoli and salad greens this past season. The collards were abundant and I made use of some, but this season my collard tastebuds weren't as attracted to the leafy green collard buddies I usually befriend.
End of last week I pulled ut the remains of the broccoli and the collard greens.…

Tomato Sprouts are Sprouting
Can you see it? There's a tiny sprout in the upper right corner. Tiny, tiny, but it's coming up.
These sprouts started out in the grocery store and then germinated about 4 days in my kitchen. …

An Argument for Organics
No apologies. Zoobird is all about culture, not politics. But we have to mention this.
"A French court on Monday declared U.S. biotech giant Monsanto guilty of chemical poisoning of a French farmer, a judgment that could lend weight to other health claims against pesticides.
In the first such case heard in court in France, grain grower Paul…

I had a chance to visit one of the new kind of dairy farmers yesterday – the kind who fills a farm
with a variety of people, and animals, plants and trees, and new ideas. This kind of farmer is fascinated with the way things work: how water and air flow through soil, how organic matter is built up or depleted, the impacts of plowing, the intricacies of grazing, the behavior of cows, chickens, predator hawks, shepherd…
Why I Don't Eat Organic {inspired by Elephant Journal}
There's an eye catcher on Elephant Journal entitled "Why I Don't Eat Organic". The answer, of course, is because it's so expensive. The recent freeze has thrown tomato prices skyward.…

Get Spiritual, Eat Sweet, or Give Kombucha a Kick ::: You Pick!
You can read (I like it) or you can go outside and discover a few things yourself. What’s a You Pick farm? It’s a farm where you visit and pick your own fruit. There’s a new
hostel in Gainesville called “The Zen Hostel”. Owner Tobe Terrell gave
me a book…
