(Night Jasmine photo by Michael Levin - Taken in Portland, OR one beautiful night)
I’ve been sick the past year, but still get around on my own, taking walks around the block a few times a week and have two caregivers that come in a few times a week to put some meals in the fridge for me and clean…
Sh'mal asked me to post this for him. Some of you know him as a social worker, others for his help with the homeless in Gainesville, FL. He managed the McRorie Community Garden for some time. I met him there. I wound up with my patch because he gave his to me. He was moving to Seattle to be… Continue
Thanks, Shmal - The Nation: "“WAR IS OVER! IF YOU WANT IT” – a full page ad in the Sunday New York Times Dec. 27 must have puzzled many readers. The ad marked an anniversary: it was 40 years ago today that John Lennon and Yoko Ono launched their “War Is Over!” campaign, with billboards in New York, London, Hollywood,… Continue

The birds were singing, the breeze was blowing and you could smell the rosemary in the garden the other day. I've been all over the place the past few weeks and had finally a chance to drop by my patch to tend the plants.
That's McRorie community gardener Nick in the photo above. He and I chatted and I hope you all get a chance to meet him virtually here at the Zoobird community. I wrote about this latest Great Day in the Garden on Elephant… Continue

Shmal mentions curbside gardens as a comment in the Community Gardens blog post. This is one I saw on the PedalPalooza Permaculture ride in Portland, OR. The idea is that even if your community garden is full, you can manage to plant some good things if you're creative.… Continue

Check the "Latest Activity" section at the bottom of Zoobird's homepage to see what's new in general.
We have a magic community here at Zoobird! Here are some of the things our members have written about:
Robbie, my vegan friend I met at the NW Hostel in Portland with his friend Gabby, who I hope joins Zoobird, has taught me so much about healthy food. Gabby has, too!…
I looked around the garden. There were patches with flowers, patches with herbs, and some patches with vegetables. I bent down and rubbed some rosemary between my fingers. I smelled it. What a lovely smell! When I looked up, I noticed someone else in the garden on the other side.
So, I walked over and said "Hi! I'm Michael Levin". He said "Hello! My name is Sh'mal". I wasn't sure I heard him, so I asked him to repeat his name. He said… Continue
Here's a message from Sh'mal that he said I could share with Zoobirds. This came after I sent him the beautiful shot of McRorie Community Garden at sunset you see above.
"Michael, how much more nostalgic can you make my life than by showing me a picture of that corner of the garden, or maybe a corner of this planet, that has been an integral part of my life for the past few years? It is my life. All…
"The noticeably bitter taste of turnip greens has been linked by researchers to its calcium content. On an ounce-for-ounce basis, turnip greens contain about 4 times more calcium than a much less bitter-tasting cruciferous vegetables like cabbage."
Have you always wanted to make your own bread? Well, here's a little article about making rye bread with a bread machine. This bread machine came from a thrift store and only cost $11.99! The ingredients to make Russian Rye were so simple you won't believe how easy it was. Enjoy!
