Brompton

Today’s {BotD} Bike of the Day is a Brompton folding bike…

Bromptons have been around for years. They’re made in England. I spotted this one at the Hawthorne Hostel in Portland, Oregon. It’s not the first folding bike I’ve seen at the

hostel. Last year, another traveler came on a Dahon he loved so much he

had it chrome plated!…

Green Tortoise Hostel, San Francisco

I'm headed out tomorrow to SF and staying at the Green Tortoise Hostel (and my bud Mike's house) I'll be dividing time between SF and Berkeley. Stay tuned! I hear the Green Tortoise is a great hostel.
Anyone have any experience staying there?

Something to think about...

I had just finished a trip to Brazzaville, Republic of Congo and then Morocco. Came back to NYC, staying on E14th Street at the hostel. It

was a quiet mid-morning on Sunday, I believe. I walked from the hostel to a coffee shop, then to a park.

And, on the way back, I looked up and saw this guy lying…

Greetings from the Congo

Parrot in a Tree in Brazzaville, Congo

Hello, Zoobirds!

I'm in Brazzaville and the air is thick with all sorts of diffternt smells. Mycol Stevens could probably identify the fungi growing on the tree I see right now. There is a big trash fire spewing smoke down the road. I hear birds singing, mostly parrots. I haven't eaten yet, for a while now, since it was a… Continue

Organic Yucatan

Knitting in Merida, Yucatan on a Monday night

Yucatan communities have the hip social patterns we seek out in places like Santa Fe, NM, Crested Butte, CO and Portland, OR. One I loved is this Monday sewing group, bathed in the energy of being together. How would you like to sew with your friends while breathing the rich tropical air, fragrant with citrus… Continue

Organics in Cochabamba, Bolivia

Cochabamba is a beautiful city, Bolivia´s 4th largest, and towers at 2500 meters or about 8,000 feet above sea level. We are here to enjoy the wedding of my friend Lamine from Senegal and Maria, who was born here.

Someone just commented to me that she loved the produce here. She said ¨The strawberries may not be so big. But, they taste so good! And, the grapes all have seeds like they should.

Before arriving here, we spent a little… Continue

Jalapeño Days at the McRorie Community Garden

There's something about hot peppers, especially jalapeños, that just makes me feel great. It all goes back to my days growing up in the Southwest. Peppers are such a part of the culture in Mexico, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Colorado (to name just a few places) that its impossible to ignore them. You just get involved to one degree or… Continue
