These guys are serious bike tourers. They aren't into a bunch of malicious talk or much sarcasm, except funny stuff.

There are great, inspiring stories about places they go, how they pack, what they ride, all sorts of things from all sorts of places.

You'll love it.

Have any of you been on some epic rides lately? Gone anywhere via bike and camped? Pickathon was just little while ago outside Portland. It's a popular music fest to cycle to.

The Sewanee Fest is this weekend in Live Oak, FL. It's about 45 minutes from Gainesville...by car. Would be a great place to ride and camp.

I've been mostly bike commuting on my townie. It's a Rivendell Bleriot. In fact, I am about to get on it and ride to this very lake. It's cool outside for the first time since about May here in Winter Park.

Let us hear from you! What's the new ride? Been to a community bike shop lately? Wow, Ryan and friends are kicking up a storm in Gainesville.

This weekend is the Handmade Bike Show in Sacramento, CA (NAHBS)

You can go to the NAHBS and see the main bike makers that will be there. Moots, for one, would be of interest to me, because I met a traveller at the Portland Hawthorne Hostel who was riding one and we did a great Swampcast interview. What a cool bike!

I've visited with a few handmade bike makers. Lex of Villin Cycles was one. There's a good interview here in the Bike Zoo. Vanilla Cycles is another, in Portland. No interview because his huge poodle wouldn't behave long enough for us to even come in and take a look around! And, Ryan Aulton of 8ABC, now known as Pleasant Cycles is gearing up to make frames.

Handmade bikes. What's the attraction? I mean, when you think about it, fine precision and tolerance are a lot easier to achieve using mechanized methods of production. But, handmade bikes make sure that errors sometimes overlooked on the assembly line are not overlooked.

What's our preference and experience? Handmade or mass produced? Which would you rather have? I'm about to go for a ride on my Trek 1000. I don't ride it much because I prefer my small batch bikes, like Ciocc. But, it is the most modern of my lot.

That's it for now. Hope you make it to the Handmade Bike Show. If you do, be sure and take lots of pix and post em here in the Bike Zoo.
Bike of the Day {BotD} ::: Schwinn hybridtag:www.zoobird.com,2015-03-14:2129360:Topic:576042015-03-14T14:21:55.866ZMichael Levinhttps://www.zoobird.com/profile/MichaelLevin

This Eisentraut is for sale right now on craigslist. The ad reads:

I bought this bicycle a couple months ago, intending to make it a daily commuter...but I've decided it's too lovely to leave chained up in downtown Berkeley all day. Such a regal machine deserves more respect. Recent upgrades/modifications include: new Velo Orange touring pedals (with steel cage and leather wrap); new Velo Orange leather touring saddle (less than ten rump-miles on it); new Continental Touring Plus tires with reflective sidewalls; new brake pads and cables; new chain; freshly wrapped bars; stem extender to provide a more upright posture; and a coffee cup holder, if you want it. The drivetrain, bars and wheels are all original. It's a 12-speed, with Shimano and Suntour components. The frame dates to about 1976; it's beautifully lugged, with some eye-catching details--note the white spades in the photos. The paint's original, in good condition but for some small blisters on the top tube (see photo). Hand-built by the Oakland master and originally sold at Stone's Cycle in Alameda, this bike is hella local. It should fit anyone from 5'7 to 5'9, I think. I'll take offers. $800.

I got it from the rescuer after he looked it up and realized it was a fine riding, collectable Italian road bike. So, it wasn't cheap, but it is unusual for a couple of reasons. It had the original tires on it, which I replaced. All the decals are intact and the paint is a brilliant canary yellow. How often do you get a chance to test ride a 40 year old Atala that's practically new?
Drop by the Bike Preserve and try it out. I think you'll agree that they don't make 'em like they used to.
