This is Mojito Mint. I almost didn't plant this guy, but how could you not with a name like that? Reminds me of Enrico's in North Beach where I had my first Mojito.

I was thinking I want to grow some herbs this season. Bob gave me this planter with 3 kinds of herbs as though he was reading my mind! Thanks, Bob.

Lastly, I attached a recording of the morning menagerie I hear these days in beautiful Gainesville with Spring approaching.

Well, that's the update. Hope you enjoyed it. How is your garden going?

They have flowered and I'm just waiting for the birds and the bees to do their thing and get the tomatoes going. I planted some spinach and it's doing fine.

Marc Williams is one of our resident botanists. He's got an informative website called Botany Everyday which I love. He is guiding his readers (including me) through a book called "Botany in a Day", by Elpel. You can follow along at Marc's Botany Everyday Facebook page. He's posting commentary about a part of the book every few weeks, so you can read and follow along. You can ask questions on his page, too. Marc will try to answer your questions.

The object of Elpel's "Botany in a Day" is to teach you a pattern method of identifying plants. So, once you get the pattern, you'll be able to tell sprouts you've planted from weeds. At least, that's the vision.

They may have done fine just planted in the garden as seeds, but the elements play havoc with seed sprouting, so I just gave them a head start.

I wondered whether I planted the sprouted seeds too deeply or let them dry out, but yes they are just fine. I used some old sprout trays and compost. These are little cherry tomatoes. Each year I plant them and they grow very well.

Every meal I eat that uses food from the garden is nicer because it tastes better and I grew it myself. I know what went into the produce I'm putting into my body.

It ws easy to sprout them. I just put them on a plate in some paper towels and kept them damp for a few days. Now, I'll put them in some little containers with soil and wait for them to grow big enough to plant. I bet there won't be any more risk of frost here in North Florida by then.

Such an easy win! I love it when things just work. I got some soil and little containers that starters come in and I'm going to plant these sprouts today.

I can remember excitedly telling people that March is the best month to visit Florida. People in California, for example. Funny. People in Chile. Even more funny. People in Spain. Hilarious. Why? Because they all know what happens this time of year. The citrus blooms and it smells great. End of story.

Not quite, cowpoke!

You gonna get some more whether you like it or not! Let me tell you, it's nirvana here in the swamp. No matter where you go, no matter what you do, you're gonna notice. You're gonna see it. It smells so delicious, you want to eat it. You may be walking down the street and there it is, that smell. It smells kind of sweet and gasoline-y at the same time.

I know...I should have quit while I was ahead. But, it's so good and I want to tell you all so bad. Words fail me. (no joke!)

Here's some more. Not one of my better shots, but hey you get what you pay for ;-). Yes, it's beautiful. How we wound up with this delightful citrus tree in the middle of our garden, I don't know. All I can say is thank you, thank you...thank you verrrry much. (Use Jay Leno's voice as you read this to yourself)

What's this, cowpokes? Why, it's mint! And, it's what we in the community gardening biz call a "volunteer", because I sure didn't plant it. But, there it is in all it's glory, hanging out in my patch. All you have to do is pick a little of this sweet stuff, boil some water, drop it into the pot and wait a few minutes. Tao of Tea beware. You've got nothing on this. It's so good, you'll want to cry with joy.

Try making some cookies to go with it out of ... I don't know what. I'll get to that one day. I have a trusty Kitchenaid mixer I have never tried, but the day will come. Soon! If you're into baking or using that contraption somehow I am all ears. Please fill me in.

You want more? I'll give you more. See that tree above? It smells so good! You may read the news and hear all sorts of awful stuff. Blight, plight, trite. Whatever. This is one thing you can do yourself. Despite everything. In spite of ourselves.

Here's a little view of the patches to the east of mine. You want beans? You need a trellace? Can you even spell trellis? Obviously, I can't. But, I jest. Anyhoo, you can see by clicking that trellis link that a trellis may cost anywhere from $20 on up. But, not if you use your noodle and make one yourself. Isn't that beautiful?

I can remember some years ago our fellow gardner Bruce Lipnickis planted some loofahs and his trellis was covered with them.

Ok...I've gone on and on enough about what a great day it was at the garden this weekend. Time for a kale smoothie and yes, I even smell some blossoms here in my humble abode emanating from who knows where. Life is good. Hope the same for you. If not, I hope this little ditty cheered you up a little. If you're looking up and seeing waves, then I beseech you...take a deep breath and venture outside yourself.

I went to the garden tonight. What a good time! So many nice things happened. I rode up at dusk and found the garden drenched in the light of the sunset. My mission tonight was simple. I wanted to pick some mint for tea. Mint is dependable. I pulled one strand of the mint, took a look around and saw that the garlic chives were thriving, as always. Troopers! Tomatoes all over the place. Meanwhile, someone visiting the garden said hi. I took a walk around and saw some old…

I wanted to pick some mint for tea. Mint is dependable. I pulled one strand of the mint, took a look around and saw that the garlic chives were thriving, as always. Troopers! Tomatoes all over the place. Meanwhile, someone visiting the garden said hi. I took a walk around and saw some old friends: the heavy pitchfork, Raggedy Anne, the hand tiller, lots of flowers, fire ants (better to know them as friends, I always say), the rooster, the owl and the others. I think we're surviving without the water timers, but it's been raining every day. It was hard during drier times without the timers. The new fence is looking more like a part of the landscape. All in all, a wonderful visit. Manana: return! Just before Christmas, I planted seeds I'd accumulated from various sources: tomatillo, carrot, sweet cream and okra. But, they didn't sprout because of cold weather.

So, yesterday I headed up to McRorie Community Garden in Gainesville, FL with my 12 sprouts.

You can see the assortment of little weeds and manure surrounding this happy Big Boy sprout. I sometimes feel like I spend more time planting and pulling weeds than eating harvest. The garden has its own rewards.

I've learned that many green plants are edible. Some taste better than others. Some don't taste good at all. Others are inedible. It's an education, but a worthwhile one. I've learned so much at workshops at Finca Mycol, the Hostel in the Forest, and Indigo Green Store.
It's rather funny that we chuckle at traditional knowledge. Remember the TV show "Green Acres"? I'll tell you what: when you're faced with an aggressive rooster and that task of putting him back in his coop is daunting, traditional "simple living" might not seem so easy.

I'm going on a bike ride with a group in a few minutes. Right afterward, I'll head over to the garden and see how my little sprouts fared in lasts night's cold.
