I planted some Holy Basil. I hear it's going to get very cold this weekend, so I may cover this up...

This is Mojito Mint. I almost didn't plant this guy, but how could you not with a name like that? Reminds me of Enrico's in North Beach where I had my first Mojito.

This is the one I am the most excited about. It's a habanero! And, it's already got some little peppers on it.

I was thinking I want to grow some herbs this season. Bob gave me this planter with 3 kinds of herbs as though he was reading my mind! Thanks, Bob.

Lastly, I attached a recording of the morning menagerie I hear these days in beautiful Gainesville with Spring approaching.

Well, that's the update. Hope you enjoyed it. How is your garden going?

They have flowered and I'm just waiting for the birds and the bees to do their thing and get the tomatoes going. I planted some spinach and it's doing fine.
Marc Williams is one of our resident botanists. He's got an informative website called Botany Everyday which I love. He is guiding his readers (including me) through a book called "Botany in a Day", by Elpel. You can follow along at Marc's Botany Everyday Facebook page. He's posting commentary about a part of the book every few weeks, so you can read and follow along. You can ask questions on his page, too. Marc will try to answer your questions.

The object of Elpel's "Botany in a Day" is to teach you a pattern method of identifying plants. So, once you get the pattern, you'll be able to tell sprouts you've planted from weeds. At least, that's the vision.

End of last week I pulled ut the remains of the broccoli and the collard greens. The broccoli were still producing florets, but once the plants start bolting (flowering) the florets become somewhat bitter, at least that's what my fan club said at the table. I'm chuckling, because I like the greens whatever condition they're in. Once I put some seasoning and onions or ginger in with them, they are completely subdued and no amount of bitterness shines through. The Ethnic Vegetarian Cookbook gives me lots of ideas. It's on the Zoobird bookshelf! Ha! Every time I look at the Zoobird Bookshelf I smile, because it reminds me of Portland. I hope to be in Portland for PedalPalooza if all goes well. Also, Chandra has given us some interesting recipes, as has new Zoobird member Carla and her wonderful Veg Indian Cooking blog.

But, I became a little anxious and each visit to the organic grocer nearby greeted me with all sorts of temptations. So, last week I piched up some serrano pepper, basil and some spinach sprouts. Funny, sort of. I meant to get some eggplant sprouts, but wound up with spinach accidentally. No matter. They're all in the earth now and I hear there's showers predicted all week. Nice!

I've been out of town a long weekend with my sprouts safely watered and growing in my kitchen. I'll be back later today, hopefully to a five day growth of tomato and basil sprouts. Anticipation!

Keep your eyes peeled for some new content in the Coffee Zoo, too...

The garden patch is cleared of those pesky weeds for the moment. I know spring is an easy time but summer brings tenacity in weed life.

No matter! Who gives a flip! Grab them by the roots and Yank, Pull, Swing, as my old friend Richard Roberts used to say, back ... way back in the day.

Meanwhile, the Botany class Marc Williams so graciously hosts online is in full swing, speaking of Swing. My copy of Botany in a Day {BiaD} is due back at my local library without a renewal option because somebody called it. I have 'til the 4th. So, my aim is to get the 7 plant families under my belt and maybe order my very own copy of BiaD. Ill try to find a used one or order straight from the source, since, as Marc advises, it's best to let all the profits go to the writer if possible.

Some people think of books you've read that you keep on a shelf afterwards as "empty 6-packs", an apt description for some, but not for reference, or the occasional great fiction. My greats include "Dharma Bums", by Kerouac, "Empanada Brotherhood", by Nichols, "The Sun Also Rises", by Hemingway, and "A Confederate General from Big Sur", by Brautigan. Just a few empty 6-packs of mine. I'd put "Botany in a Day", by Elpel up there in the non fiction right next to "A Pattern Language", by Alexander et al. That is, even though I haven't gotten past chapter one yet! I strongly recommend Marc Williams www.botanyeveryday.com, and he's right here on Zoobird for easy access if you want to ping him. Hi Marc! In fact, Marc and Mycol Stevens, also on Zoobird, will teach an Ethnobotany and Wild Fermentation class at the Hostel in the Forest in May. See the Events section here on Zoobird for details.

With that, I'll leave you with a few requests. If you haven't friended me here on Zoobird, please do so I can include you in email. Please post up to date details about what you're up to and maybe a profile photo if you have a sec. I love reading about your interests, reading lists, favorite music, etc and I'd love to know where you're currently living geographically. As opposed to metaphysically, which is also interesting ;-)

If you like, please use Zoobird's invite feature (on the menu) to invite some friends. The hits you see on articles show that lots of people could be enjoying this magic. Tune into www.opbmusic.com if you get the chance on the web (all you non-Portlandites), because it's what I like. Then, you can decide if it's for you.

And, that's all for this morning. Chow! Let me hear from you! Blog a little, post a discussion, upload some photos or media like links to videos, music, audio files (as attachments to Discussions - have you seen that you can do that?).

TTYL,

They may have done fine just planted in the garden as seeds, but the elements play havoc with seed sprouting, so I just gave them a head start.

I wondered whether I planted the sprouted seeds too deeply or let them dry out, but yes they are just fine. I used some old sprout trays and compost. These are little cherry tomatoes. Each year I plant them and they grow very well.

Every meal I eat that uses food from the garden is nicer because it tastes better and I grew it myself. I know what went into the produce I'm putting into my body.

I planned in advance a little and got some seeds for this season. It ws easy to sprout them. I just put them on a plate in some paper towels and kept them damp for a few days. Now, I'll put them in some little containers with soil and wait for them to grow big enough to plant. I bet there won't be any more risk of frost here in North Florida by then.

Such an easy win! I love it when things just work. I got some soil and little containers that starters come in and I'm going to plant these sprouts today.
