Take some fresh lemons and make lemonade. Cut up some jalapeños and put them in a container of water. Let the jalapeños infuse into the water just like you do with a mojito. Add the jalapeño water to the lemonade and you've got Jalapeño Lemonade. You can sweeten it with anything you like. I just made some and used organic blue agave nectar. It added a little taste of its own that added to the appeal. It tastes great ice cold. It's also a good base to add all sorts of stuff to: other fruit, like strawberries. The jalapeño is the clever part that gives it a distinctive flavor.

This Champion juicer is probably the most popular juicer among my friends. But, you don't have to get fancy and it's not complicated. Just find a way to extract juice from fruit and veg, then use your imagination with combinations.

Update: I just rode the trusty Bianchi (another story) to the supermarket to get some papaya and yoghurt, granola and pineapple. Well, the granola is $6/lb and I looked at the ingredients: mainly oats, flax seed, honey, cinnamon, etc...all stuff I can find in my kitchen. Now, it's nice to have the convenience of something pre-fabricated, but it also has a lot more sugar and some preservatives I just don't need. Plus, oats are about $0.80/lb for organic, last time I checked.

I am not poor, and I am not the 1% either (surprise!) but I would rather spend my money on fun stuff than on some lazy way out of getting a buzz from doing it myself (DIY) if I have the time. It's all about that "Which would you rather do: be invited to the party or throw it yourself?" thing for me. So, I skipped the granola.

I did get a nice papaya. The label fell off so I can't tell where it's from.

I got a pineapple, too. It's a Del Monte and it's from Costa Rica. Hey, I noticed it has a QR code on the label:

Do you know what a QR code is? It's a graphic you can scan with a QR code reader app on a smart phone and you'll be taken to a website. See it above? It's in the lower right corner or the label. It's a square graphic with three dots (to help the QR code reader align). This one takes you to www.FreshDelMonte.com and a little story about pineapples. I'd be interested in whether you have ever heard of a QR code...I have a good reason to ask you this question. I am thinking of creating a social piece of software that may use a QR code...but, I digress!

Stay tuned - time for a smoothie!

It's a drink you can sink your teeth into. Last time I checked, it cost around $5 for one of these at the local juice bar. All it took to make this was a nice bike ride, one where I met a friend on the way to the store <bonus>, a little time to chop and blend, and voila! Enough left for company...
Obie's Papaya Smoothietag:www.zoobird.com,2010-08-17:2129360:Topic:280872010-08-17T20:20:26.703ZMichael Levinhttps://www.zoobird.com/profile/MichaelLevin

There’s a book called “Finding God in the Garden”, by Balfour Brickner…

You can read (I like it) or you can go outside and discover a few things yourself. What’s a You Pick farm? It’s a farm where you visit and pick your own fruit. There’s a new
hostel in Gainesville called “The Zen Hostel”. Owner Tobe Terrell gave
me a book he wrote called “The Game Caller”. I’ll write more about
these two books another time. “The Game Caller” talks about a visit to
a Hare Krishna home. My takeaway is his thought that “Krishna’s name
may change from one religion to another”. I believe there’s
spirituality out on the farm.

How many times have you passed signs that call out “You Pick”? Did you stop? I suggest you do. Here’s the drill: pull over, park it (a bike? Nice!) and walk in. Say hi, stretch your body and grab a bucket.
Walk over to a tree full of fruit and eat a little. Most places don’t
mind at all if you eat a bunch *and* buy some.

Go hungry! Things taste better when you’re hungry. Don’t worry about what you’re going to take with you. Just eat as much as you want. It’s good for you. So is being outdoors. Did you bring some people you love?
That’s key. It’ll be even more fun with people you love.

It’s quiet on the farm. You’ll hear birds, the wind, branches rustling. You’ll discover your own technique, a picker’s technique.

Nick and Erin Picked...Eachother!

Nick and Erin just got married. And, today’s Nick’s birthday! They have just been on a late honeymoon to Guatemala, post tropical storm. Erin picked coffee in Central America. So, she had particular talent
for blueberry picking. Her technique? Grab a bunch and hold the bucket
underneath. She wound up with a mighty bucketful. In our case, the
blueberries were $3/lb.

Ever read “The Yearling”, by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings? We were just down the road a piece from Cross Creek, where the story takes place, here in Florida. There are some intricacies about picking blueberries
and what to do afterwards, just like many other seemingly simple
things. Like, the advice is not to wash them until you’re ready to use
them. Don’t let me mislead you though: You Pick is not complicated.
Kids love it. Lots of room to run and play. Parents do, too. Not much
for the kids to get in trouble with.

Nick and Michael Pick Blueberries

Did I mention something about kombucha? I hear a rumor there’s some controversy about the fizzy tea known as kombucha. I’ve held my tongue. Why get involved? What do I care if lots of people run something down
so much that the readers may never give it a try. Let me say a few
things. One, I don’t know about you, but I noticed that near beer
(non-alcoholic) has about a half a percent alcohol. Ever ask yourself
how many of those little boogers you’d have to drink to get a buzz?

I know the controversy is not about kombucha being a half a percent alcohol. It’s about it sometimes being more than a half a percent. All I can say is personally, mine never gives me the slightest feeling that
I’ve “had a drink”. Just sayin.

How does kombucha taste? Well, how does tea taste? It’s different, depending on what kind you choose. You can make kombucha with black, green, flavored tea or even mate, among many others!

Ever buy kimchi in a grocery store? Here in the US, we have a very popular kind that doesn’t appeal to me much. It’s bitter, kind of dry and tastes like it’s been on the shelf too long. On the other hand, we
make some kimchi from our community garden vegetables that tastes so
good the people prefer it to cinnamon buns. I’ll fill you in on that
another time, too.

Point being that kombucha is a lot like other things that differ from maker to maker. It tastes vinegary if you let it sit too long. You may have read one article quoting a kombucha manufacturer saying
something like you don’t drink it for taste. You drink it because it’s
good for you. OK, I had to get this exactly right. Here’s the quote
from Seth Goldman of Honest Tea “I will say that I don’t know if
kombucha ever sold on its taste… I guess you get used to it, but I
think functionality is the main selling point of kombucha to the
consumers who buy it.” I’m not going to belabor this point, but to
state the obvious, do you really expect to like something after hearing
the maker say that? No offense, Seth. On the contrary, I admire your
honesty. It takes guts and integrity to say something like that. Well,
the kombucha I make tastes good. Especially kombucha with fresh
blueberries in it. Not just good, but sort of like champagne or cider,
only flavored the way I like it.

All right. I’ll leave you with this thought. You have lots of choices when it comes to how you spend your free time. But, I’ll say picking blueberries is one nice option. My guitar teacher turned me on to the wonders of juicing. I'd drop by for a lesson and he'd say "Hey, you want something to drink?" He had a juicer that looked like it was commercial, and a press too. He'd make some delicious juices, usually with coconut milk added. My guitar teacher turned me on to the wonders of juicing. I'd drop by for a lesson and he'd say "Hey, you want something to drink?" He had a juicer that looked like it was commercial, and a press too. He'd make some delicious juices, usually with coconut milk added. After he juiced the stuff, he'd take the pulp and put it in a press that looked like a bumper jack. Maybe it was, I don't know. Either way, it was delicious.

A while later, one of our friends gave me an old juicer. It's plastic and works fine, but I'd use 5 pounds of carrots and get very little juice. I noticed he got a lot more juice than I did. So, I made it a mental note: find a juicer like my guitar teacher's.

Well, thanks to Craigslist, I found a Golden Harvest Imperial 9901 juicer the other day. Craigslist is an amazing website. It's simple. No graphics. It's free, except if you want to place an employment ad in a major city. That costs $25, and the money sustains Craigslist's tiny but effective staff. The website is not just sales, but a social network. It's also self-policing. What I mean by that is that if you see something that is not right, just click "flag" and it will get a second look from the moderators. If a post gets flagged for a good reason, it will be removed.

I contacted the seller, arranged to meet him after seeing some more photos showing what he pointed out as stains and surface rust I should know about, and we met at the local used bookstore and vegetarian cafe, Books, Inc. While I was there, I saw a cool, vintage French "Leopard" bike and had a great time gathering info and photos so I could write up an article on it. Here's the article and the bike is in the photo below.

I was waiting around for Mario to show up and started talking with the proprietor at the bookstore. I just finished reading "The Dharma Bums", by Kerouac. I couldn't for the life of me remember who the character Japhy was based on. I asked the proprietor (didn't catch his name) and he immediately said "Gary Snyder. He's in poetry and natural sciences". Man, what a great book. And, nice that the guy working in the bookstore likes beat fiction. Gotta find some stuff by Gary Snder. I liked his description of "The Book of Tea", by the way. And, it's on the web, in case you're interested. Click here to find out about "The Book of Tea".

Cool! I got a beautiful, industrial quality juicer. Made some new friends: Mario, the guy with the juicer and Tony, the guy with the cool "Leopard" bike. And, I have to say, the web is changing everything, while everything remains the same.

People worry that social networks are isolating people. I disagree. It's a tool, just like the telephone and TV. Do you think TV is killing people's social skills? I don't think so. I think it's a great thing to be able to stay in touch with people all over the place that would be impractical to connect with without the web.

At any rate, I just had to look on eBay and see what other juicers like mine were selling for. I found an ad for one with this note attached:

From an eBay ad: "A note on email: I check my email once or twice a week. I do everything through eBay. I answer questions, check payment status, send messages, and add tracking numbers through eBay. I don't check my email often because I am a single dad of two and I am going to school full-time at Portland State University. I fall behind in listing items, school work, and my social life (or lack there of) but I believe I am not falling behind with my children...even though I don't know how to answer some of my son's questions about his mom. So, if you need an immediate response feel free to ASK SELLER A QUESTION on one of my active items and I will answer you within 24 hours (I hope).

A note on shipping: Shipping will be based on weight, dimensions, zipcode, and a $2.55 handling fee that I will most likely be spending on insurance and tracking. I don't know exactly how much shipping is until I take your boxed item to the post office. I weigh the item on my vintage scale and guesstimate on the weight of box and stuffing. If the eBay calculator or my scale makes a mistake and you see from the sticker on your box that what you paid exceeded the actual cost, feel free to contact me for a refund (if you see that I paid more than what you paid...well, do what feels right). You'll see when you get your box that I don't use those stickers that you can't see what I paid for shipping."

By the way, this juicer is in Portland, so if it sounds good to you and you're one of many Zoobird readers in Portland (did that sound like a commercial?), you'll save on shipping and the seller will not have to guesstimate the shipping charges! It looks like a nice juicer. I can say that now that I am a juicer aficionado.

If stuff like this makes you want to shop at your local Mom and Pop store to get that personal treatment, I know just what you mean. It's all about being human, all about life. "Another drink i recently have been fascinated with is hot chocolate, made with 60% cacao chocolate chips from Ghiradelli (available at Costco). the key is to use plain soy milk, creates a more luscious drink. Prior to melting the chocolate with the (soy) milk, mix in ground ancho chile peppers, or something like that. Add sea salt flakes to complete (or use kosher salt in a pinch)"

Wow, the ancho chili chocolate combination is probably unbelievably good,..I am headed to Costco! Rose Lassi variationtag:www.zoobird.com,2008-10-31:2129360:Topic:71622008-10-31T13:44:50.594ZMichael Levinhttps://www.zoobird.com/profile/MichaelLevin

Carrot Orange Juice and a Bonus - Soup with Carrot Pulp!tag:www.zoobird.com,2008-10-12:2129360:Topic:60532008-10-12T15:53:51.441ZMichael Levinhttps://www.zoobird.com/profile/MichaelLevin
Carrot juice goes naturally well with orange juice.

You can use the leftover carrot pulp to make a delicious soup. I found this recipe on the grocery store bulk carrot wrapper, but I tore it before I read it, so this is the abridged version:

Carrot Pulp
Celery Stalk or 2
An Onion
1/4 cup Oil
3 14 oz cans vegetable or chicken broth
juice of an orange
2 Tbsp minced fresh ginger
1 cup heavy cream

Saute' carrots, onion and celery in oil. Then add the rest of the ingredients.

Voila'! Looks like…

UPDATE ::: I made the soup. It's good. I am truly not sure that there was value add to the carrot pulp because I added 15 carrot stalks. So, it was not a scientific experiment in that there were two variables. Next time, I'll try making soup from just the pulp. But, it's delicious!
