It’s especially spectacular if you’re in a Volkswagen Westy with a 90 hp engine. Maximum speed up the pass is about 25 miles an hour.

Coming closer to a Fred versus Frederica decision. I’ve been very patient with this 2003 Volkswagen Eurovan. I spent 10 years fixing up Fred the 1985 Volkswagen Westfalia. I can tell you right now I’m not gonna do the same thing with this Eurovan. Definitely, probably. LOL.

PLANTING FOOD FORESTS TO FEED FAMILIES

School children and their communities will learn regenerative food production systems, which protect and strengthen biodiversity, restore depleted soils and feed families. This partnership is requesting funds for two planting seasons this year. Approximately 15-20,000 trees will be planted as food forests by school children and their communities.

As rural Ugandan families become less food secure, it is essential for local communities and young people to access skills that enable them to understand and practice food production in environmentally friendly ways that do not further damage the already soils or endanger other species in the neighboring local resources. A food forest is a food production system that focuses on diverse dietary needs of humans, while at the same time protecting our land and the earth we all share.

A well designed and maintained food production system will protect and regenerate our soil, sink and store water, and sequester carbon. Food Forests Uganda teaches regenerative agriculture to enable long term food security, provide income opportunities for youth and improved nutrition for communities and schools, climate-smart gardens also create a safer habitat for domestic animals and insects as well as a safer environment for Wildlife and ultimately, food forests produce an abundance of food and supplies while regenerating a healthy ecosystem.

It's planting time and we need your help! JOIN our eco-movement by helping us purchase avocado, guava, tree tomato, papaya, and mango seedlings for planting by our food forests Uganda students and families.

This curry recipe brought back memories. I almost forgot how much I love Indian food.

The last time I made Indian food, I used some dreadful curry paste from a jar. Being sort of a one trick pony, that was the last time I “made” curry.

An 80 year old man is having his annual checkup.

The doctor asks him how he's feeling, "I've never been better!" he replies. "I've got an eighteen year old bride who's pregnant with my child! What do you think about that?"

The doctor considers this for a moment, then says, "Well, let me tell you a story. I know a guy who's an avid hunter. He never misses a season. But one day he's in a bit of a hurry and he accidentally grabs his umbrella instead of his gun. So he's walking in the woods near a creek and suddenly spots a beaver in some brush in front of him! He raises up his umbrella, points it at the beaver and squeezes the handle. *BAM* The beaver drops dead in front of him."

"That's impossible!" said the old man in disbelief, "Someone else must have shot that beaver".

"Exactly." says the doctor.

Have you thought about life off the grid?

One reason I love my Westy so much is because it is self contained. It has all the things you lose when you go off the grid.

Have you thought about life off the grid?

One reason I love my Westy so much is because it is self contained. It has all the things you lose when you go off the grid.

Think about it. Off grid means no electricity, water & plumbing.

My Westy has a battery, water tank and porta potty. It has a gas fridge, a sink and stove, and a comfy couple of beds.

This can do well for a long time. Why? Because it has an engine and wheels.

When you need stuff, you can drive off and get them.

Now, think about the yurt in the photo. There’s a fine shelter. Yurts have been around for centuries. Nomadic tribes love them.

But, think for a minute. No electricity means no refrigerator. No lightbulbs at night. No air conditioning. No heater.

What about water? You need city water, a well, or rain barrels.

What about toilet?

You're fine for a week or so in a Westy before you’ve got to restock.

Also, a Westy is fine for one or two people. Maybe a couple of kids! But, trust me. I’ve been out in my Westy with a couple of my boys for more than a couple of days. It gets stinky fast!

Thoughts? I know it’s entirely do able. That’s my Westy next to my buddy Mycol’s yurt. Off grid. The whole deal. I love it there, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Hard work pays off. Stay tuned.
Breakfast of Champions!tag:www.zoobird.com,2019-08-24:2129360:BlogPost:695032019-08-24T14:15:14.000ZMichael Levinhttps://www.zoobird.com/profile/MichaelLevin

I met Mycol 10 years ago at an event called Fall Harvest Fest. It was hosted at Indigo, Liberty Phoenix's shop in Gainesville. Mycol invited me to his property, The Finca Mycol. I wrote an article all about how he lives off the grid there called Living Off the Grid. We've been friends ever since.

The ironic part of the fire is that Mycol was helping host a Permaculture Gathering that was supposed to be at William Wallace's place, but couldn't happen because William's place was messed up from Hurricane Michael.

It's going to be OK, but lots of stuff was destroyed in the fire. Tools, plants, canoes, all sorts of stuff that helped keep Finca Mycol running.

People are invited to come out this weekend and help clean up. If you have a trailer to help haul trash, that would be appreciated.

It's chilly outside and the air will be smoky from the ashes. There are camping spots around. I bet tonight will be magic with the cool weather, stars above and good vibes from people helping out. Bring your own food and maybe we'll see you there.

These guys are serious bike tourers. They aren't into a bunch of malicious talk or much sarcasm, except funny stuff.

There are great, inspiring stories about places they go, how they pack, what they ride, all sorts of things from all sorts of places.

You'll love it.

Have any of you been on some epic rides lately? Gone anywhere via bike and camped? Pickathon was just little while ago outside Portland. It's a popular music fest to cycle to.

The Sewanee Fest is this weekend in Live Oak, FL. It's about 45 minutes from Gainesville...by car. Would be a great place to ride and camp.

I've been mostly bike commuting on my townie. It's a Rivendell Bleriot. In fact, I am about to get on it and ride to this very lake. It's cool outside for the first time since about May here in Winter Park.

Let us hear from you! What's the new ride? Been to a community bike shop lately?
You have to wonder how people stayed comfortable back in the old days here in Florida. Well, here's the thing: before development occurred, there was tree cover everywhere. Shady trees make for a much cooler environment. That's the good thing about this park and parks like it.

Gainesville has a thriving bicycle culture. A while back, we had a get together called Dinner and Bikes. One dish that stood out as both delicious and creative was curried bananas and kale pasta.

Wow, amazing flavor that popped out at you! I went home and made some right away.

Last night, I wanted to make it again but I couldn't find the recipe. There's not many recipes around with both bananas and kale, but I found lots of recipes with curry and bananas. So, away it went!

There it is, in all its beauty! And here's how it's done. My starting point was a great recipe I found on the web.

For 4 servings, I used:

1/2 cup of curry powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons turmeric

2 teaspoons pepper

1 tablespoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons cumin

2 cups of yoghurt

2 bananas

3 tomatoes

10 oz tomato sauce

2 teaspoons chili powder

a tablespoon of shredded ginger

2 tablespoons sugar

a few cloves of chopped up garlic

Begin by cooking some onions and garlic in olive oil and stirring in the blend of spices. Then, stir in the tomato sauce, yoghurt and banana. Finally, add the chopped up tomatoes.

I used brown rice and it all turned out fantastic! The recipe said you could add coconut flakes. I bet that would compliment the sweetness of the bananas. It might be better with a lighter oil like sunflower or sesame seed oil.

I had some fresh spinach but I didn't add it after all. That would have made the dish come close to the kale and banana curry that was so delicious.
Yet Another Diet Recommendationtag:www.zoobird.com,2018-05-30:2129360:BlogPost:651462018-05-30T13:30:00.000ZMichael Levinhttps://www.zoobird.com/profile/MichaelLevin

One of my favs is The Florida Project. http://www.floridaproject.movie/ https://www.sonypicturethis.com/
The Old Man And The Seatag:www.zoobird.com,2018-02-14:2129360:BlogPost:654122018-02-14T11:30:00.000ZMichael Levinhttps://www.zoobird.com/profile/MichaelLevin

Knew right away it was Hemingway.

“He always thought of the sea as 'la mar' which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her. Sometimes those who love her say bad things of her but they are always said as though she were a woman. Some of the younger fishermen, those who used buoys as floats for their lines and had motorboats, bought when the shark livers had brought much money, spoke of her as 'el mar' which is masculine. They spoke of her as a contestant or a place or even an enemy. But the old man always thought of her as feminine and as something that gave or withheld great favours, and if she did wild or wicked things it was because she could not help them. The moon affects her as it does a woman, he thought.”

This is what it meant to Brian:
Some of the younger fishermen refer to the sea in male terms (el mar), as if the sea is a competitor to be overcome to get to the fish below (or even to survive in storms).

The old man considers the sea to be feminine - a woman that is fickle and loving and will give great gifts if she is able (and treated well). She is also capable of being a total ***** if she's not treated well or if she can't help you, and will send storms and surges and red tides and all sorts of maritime disasters in your direction. The sea is also affected by the moon - just like a woman (28 days in a lunar cycle, 28 days in the woman's menstrual cycle).

The old man considers the sea to be his mistress, his lover. He loves her and is only truly at home when they are together.

Brian Rain
---

I like that answer. I think I'll reread "The Old Man And The Sea".

Do you agree with Brian? Do you think get anything else from it?
Red Shouldered Hawk!tag:www.zoobird.com,2018-02-12:2129360:BlogPost:651072018-02-12T12:30:00.000ZMichael Levinhttps://www.zoobird.com/profile/MichaelLevin

Here's an article that describes how to convert a Jeep into a camper. Now, after reading it you may think 1) massive overkill and 2) are you really free if you wind up in debt? That's what I thought. I also thought hey, you can accomplish the same thing with much less if you just rely a little on society infrastructure along the way. But, if you truly want to be self sufficient for a day or so at a time, this is one approach. Why do I say only a day or so? Because you'll have to fill up the tank every day or so. And, if you find a gas station, chances are you'll find clean water, supplies, etc. These are things to think about.

Of course, these assumptions are personal. I'll never forget the look on Mycol Steven's face when I asked him what kind of camping equipment he had. Mycol has camped all over Florida and many other places. The look was classic. Sort of "are you serious?" Mycol's not a gadget guy. He takes stuff to make sure he can eat, sleep and cloth himself right according to where he goes. Sometimes it's a just tent, blanket (Florida is warm), skillet, plate, cup, knife, canteen, boots, shovel, water and food. He destroys vehicles! His cars don't get "detailed" unless by that you mean decorated by branches you brush up against driving down a dirt road. When I met him, he was driving a car a massive branch had dented the hood and broken the windshield.

In the case of this Jeep, it's equipped to do rock and dune climbing, winch out of a jam, sit in some out of the way spot for days at a time and trickle charge, filter water, and survive super rugged environments. You'd want some of that driving through Africa.

On the other hand, if you plan to travel but stay on paved roads...well, you don't need all the ruggedness. 18 flats? How did he get 18 flats? At least he has a compressor. That's not going to do a lot of good without a spare tire. But, this is one guys idea of how to be self sufficient. I think it's pretty cool! What's your idea of a travel vehicle?

Here's a preview of the places he goes. This is the right vehicle for these types of conditions. http://youtu.be/waQGUz0Z97Y

Here's the Jeep story:
http://www.businessinsider.com/i-transformed-a-jeep-into-a-moving-house-to-travel-around-africa-2016-6
