"Everybody wants to go green, but nobody wants to pay for it."

I hear that statement all the time. Everybody likes to talk about going green, but if it costs anything, the eyes glaze over, and the conversation is over. So is that really true?

The situation with the economy is dire. I understand. There are many people who have lost their jobs. I understand. How can I understand? I'm one of them. I was also part of a corporate lay-off earlier this year. I am divorced, so I have no other back-up income. I do understand -- more than you know.

Solar power to pressurize rain barrel water

Once you have a rain barrel, and it's collecting the water, how do you move the water to where it's needed? That's the question James Fisher from Peachtree City, GA asked himself. After hauling buckets and buckets of water to his
wife's flower gardens, he decided there must be a better way. Since he is a systems engineer by trade, he designed a solar-powered water pumping system that would pressurize the water so he could use it with his yard sprinklers and misting units. Then his neighbors aske… Continue

Barry Hannah's Long Shadow

One afternoon in July, the author Barry Hannah took to the small roads south of Oxford, Mississippi, where he lives, to visit the grave of friend and fellow writer Larry Brown. Hannah hadn’t been out this way in some months. He missed an important turn at a place called the Yocona River Inn and had to stop at a country store to ask directions...

Grow Your Own Spring Salad Mix | Garden Guides

If you're craving fresh greens and horrifed by supermarket prices, why not grow your own? Nothing tastes fresher and sweeter than a spring salad just picked from your own windowsill or garden. The best time to harvest Mesclun is early in the morning before the sun is high; heat causes wilting. Start harvesting when the greens are two inches long, never letting them get more than six inches tall; use scissors to snip them off just above the growing crowns (about one inch above the soil level). This is called the cut-and-come-again method because the crop will grow back; if you water and lightly fertilize after harvesting, the greens should be ready for harvest again soon.

What Is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a living health drink made by fermenting tea and sugar with the kombucha culture. The result can taste like something between sparkling apple cider and champagne, depending on what kind of tea you use. It's not what you'd imagine fermented tea to taste like.

Masticating Juicer

A masticating juicer is the answer to every juicing problem. Because it operates on the mastication process, this type of juicer chews the fibers and breaks up the cells of vegetables and fruits. This give you more fiber, enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals. This all results in the darker, richer color of the juice and a sweeter, richer more full-bodied flavor.

I can see clearly now the rain is gone
