Somaly Mam

Greetings,

We are pleased to announce that Somaly Mam, Cambodian human rights
activist, former slave and author of The Road of Lost Innocence: The
True Story of a Cambodian Heroine, will be speaking Monday, September
21, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Central Florida in the Cape
Florida Ballroom of the Student Union. Her presentation will be on "The
Road of Lost Innocence."

Mam was born in a tribal, ethnic minority family in Cambodia, and
struggled through poverty and limited opportunities during her
childhood. She was sold into slavery many times by a man who posed as
her grandfather. She was subjected to and witnessed horrific treatment,
torture, manipulation and scare tactics. One night, she even saw a close
friend murdered by one of her tormentors.

From that moment on, she made it her mission to escape and later find a
way to stop the vicious cycle. She now focuses all her efforts on
helping young children and women who have become victims of slavery and
human trafficking. For her efforts, Mam has been honored as a “CNN
Hero” and featured on various TV specials on CBC, CBS, NBC and MSNBC.

The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the UCF
Global Perspectives Office, UCF Political Science Department, UCF
Women's Studies Program, UCF Women's Research Center, UCF International
Services Center, Lawrence J. Chastang and the Chastang Foundation, UCF
LIFE and the Global Connections Foundation.
