About the CSA Zoo

The CSA Zoo is a celebration of Community Supported Agriculture. The CSA Zoo is here to educate, promote, and serve as a little village in the Zoobird community where people and organizations who are interested in CSA can gather.

"Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

This arrangement creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer." (from Local Harvest)

Comment by Tim Kinney on December 5, 2011 at 10:59am: I just finished reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver. It was terrific! She has become my favorite author. This one is about a year on her farm in Virginia, when her family took a vow to live on only what they could grow themselves, or buy from neighbors. The book is quite informative, but it's also laugh-out-loud funny! I sat on my back porch reading it, and giggling like a fool!

I was a member of a CSA in Charlottesville VA before moving to Gainesville (1998-2000) and am now a member of Plowshares in Gainesville. I LOVE it. I think what I like best is the relief from decision making and the challenge of cooking what's in the bag. It is the best way to go.

Jim - you might look at http://www.localharvest.org/ or visit your local farmer's market. Some of the organic farmers who operate CSA's may have their pick up at the market and/or also sell the excess.
