Dangerously organic!

Springtime at the McRorie Community Garden

Plants are blooming, bees are buzzing, and all's well at the garden. We made a delicious dinner last night using the florets from our prolific broccoli. This was an easy meal: we sauteed the broccoli florets in a little olive oil, added some garlic and salt and then poured in a little tomato sauce and pre soaked chick peas. Once things got tender, we added a little cous cous and a few minutes later, we had a delicious meal with carbs, protein and lots of dark green.

These broccolis have given and given all through the end of winter and now into the beginning of summer. I look around the garden and see yellow squash flowers turning into beautiful squash. There's a citrus tree full of fruit. I've planted a bunch of mesclun and it's beginning to sprout. I also planted a little onion and carrot. High hopes.

We've gotten lots of rain this week, so the horse manure is blending in well with the soil. Thanks to the volunteers for bringing it in.

How is your garden growing? We have a new member here at Zoobird with a lovely blog all about vegetarian Indian cooking. Check out Carla's page and visit that website. It's full of wonderful info.

Mycol stevens and Marc Williams gave a workshop at the Hostel In the Forest last weekend. I attended and went on plant walks, learned more about mead making and had a fantastic time. Check out www.foresthostel.com for future events.

There are several festivals coming up, many of which you can find on Marc William's wonderful Botany Everyday website. These include Firefly, LEAF, and some way out west near WA and OR. Stay tuned and I'll post many here on Zoobird.

Down in Orlando, FL - Tia Meer is keeping busy at her Econ Farm. Check out her Zoobird page, too and you'll see all she's been up to.

Keep in touch, please blog a little here and upload more photos. We love seeing what you're up to. Things change, so please update your profile with a new photo if you have one and tell us your current interests. We want to see your websites, hear about your events and learn from you in your areas of interest.

All the best,

Michael Levin
