Helsinki Wool Ride Jan the 6th 2010

Posted on January 8, 2010 at 4:30am 1 Comment

The Helsinki Fixed Gear and Single Speed people (aka. yksivaihde.net) decided to gather together to have a nice wintery ride, since for once the winter weather in Helsinki is more like "snow and cold and shine" than the usual "slush and water and ice and mud and bad winds and total darkness".

So at 1PM the group of about 20 bicyclists gathered together in the city center and took a ride around the city center. Weather was nice, there was no wind and the temperature was around -10'C,… Continue

Xmas on it's way, year coming to a change -- time to wrap up 2009

Hello all fellow-zoobirders!

I hope you are all fine and feeling good.

My 2009 has been a good one. Work has been good, new ideas and development and more responsibilities.

Bike has been riding all year round - only four (4) days I have commuted to the office with something else than a bicycle. Plus the long summer ride from Helsinki to Joensuu that I mentioned earlier.

Musically it has been a quiet year - only 10 gigs (with 5 different groups) plus… Continue

Snowy ride this morning!

It has been a winter for a week or so in Helsinki too now. Temperature well below zero (centigrade...), and there is snow. Pure white snow. And it is snowing some more!

ps. and oh, the brave people doing the ice fishing -

less than 2 weeks ago, this place had still no ice at all… Continue

Bike Trip from Helsinki to Joensuu

Posted on August 7, 2009 at 9:57am 2 Comments

Hi all,

I had been thinking about a bike trip that would take more than a day for a couple of summers. This summer seemed to open up an opportunity to do so. So I decided to ride from Helsinki, my current home town, to my place of birth, Joensuu.

The shortest route between these two cities is around 480kms. But since those roads have quite a heavy traffic they didn't suit my purposes of seeing the beautiful nature on the way. So the plan for the route was drawn via smaller… Continue

Hey there, Pete! Time for an update to your Zoobird page. Location, current bike, stories to tell...I've seen some cool Crescents, been on a medical field trip (Yucatan, to be exact) and heard music all that's reminded me of Senor Korhonen. RSVP! /michael

Pete! Good to see you're part of Music, Travelin' and Pepper Zoo. I am out the door to Bolivia! Zoobird bud Lamine Ba will be my host at 14,000 feet about this time tomorrow. Time for an update from My Korhonen. How is life in beautiful, snowy Scandinavia? Music news? Adventures with cuisine? Been anywhere interesting? How about biking? I look forward to reading your thoughts and seeing some photos, and perhaps listening to some music from your band. All the best, Mike

Pete, I love your site! How did you make it look so professional. I too am into music. I can't imagine life without it. I love your way of thinking and ideas. I'd like to invite you to be my friend and to join my new group, Environmental Zoo where you can express your concerns, solutions, ideas, or anything else you'd like to share. I would also like to invite you to join in the discussion on the environment which I recently started. See you there?

Thanks, Pete. The Alexander Technique...is it more for physical therapy or for drumming? This could make for a discussion in the Music Zoo entitled "Alexander Technique for Musicians." Sounds like you take a Zen approach to life. Nice.

Pete, Can you please elaborate on your Alexander Techniques work. What led you to it and how do you like it? How about an update on your Crescent bike restoration. And, I'd be interested to hear about your music background. Is your work driven by political expression more or less than the music itself?

Thanks man! I keep it simple and sell through only one shop (Track Star NYC) or direct from me.
I do ship though.
I dig your conversion BTW. I roll a track bike around the city for pretty much every thing. Just bolt on the wheels and add some air. Works even in the rain.

Hi

My single speed Atala Giro D'Italia from Milan, early 1970s. I purchased this from my alexander techniques teacher as he had the bike just standing in his basement and I needed a ride. He had gotten it from London about 5-6 years earlier.

First idea was to make it a normal geared city bike, but since I was not able to find a decent derailleur to the back, the boys in "Kumiluoti" (Rubber bullet) here in Helsinki converted it to a single speed monster.

Tech details:
Front wheel: Sovos hub, Rigida rim 700c.
Rear: Altenburger hub, Mavic Open 700c rim
Chainwheel/front: 52 teeth, rear 18 teeth.
Brakes: Weinmann, levers: Shimano Exage
Bar: Cinelli
Stem: 3ttt touring
Cranks: Solida
Pedals: Look
Saddle: Persons #77 Deluxe
