Great Day at the Garden!

Today, I visited my patch at the garden. Click on the photo above to see some of my favorite things in the garden. You'll see some nice, ripening jalapeños. The cinnamon basil is finally growing enough so I can grab handfuls of it. There are some delicious cherry tomatoes. You'll see some urban mandalas. The mandalas have been moved to new places in the garden… Continue

Carraig Dulra - Organics in Ireland

Carraig Dulra is an organic farm in Wicklow, just outside Dublin, Ireland. Zoobird members Mike and Suzie Cahn organize workshops, training and camping at this idyllic setting. We can learn a lot about making a sustainable, organic low profit enterprise work and making a positive impact on the community by taking a look at their website,… Continue

A Great Day at the Garden

Yesterday was another beautiful day at the McRorie Community Garden, As you can see in the photo above, the garden isn't all about veggies. There are some patches with beautiful flowers. Click on the photo to see the entire set I took yesterday.

A Great Day at the Garden

This week the McRorie Garden was particularly beautiful. Click the photo above to see a set of shots I took. My tomatoes are growning nicely. A few of the watermelon sprouts I planted are rooting. It's looking good!

How's your spring garden looking?

A Great Day at the Garden!

What's the big smile about? That's Ron Chandler smiling at me at the McRorie Community Garden on the 24th. Ron's been in Asia, as you all may have read on his blog. I've been in the thin air of Crested Butte, CO. You can click on the photo above to see the set.

Here's my… Continue

Biking in Florida

The orange blossoms are in bloom. And, the weather is spectacular. Sunsets? Like you've never seen before...

A bicycle is one of the best ways to experience nature at its fullest. After a long days work, I rode out to a nearby lake to watch the sunset. No fancy camera necessary. I caught this fiery sunset with an iPhone. I was recently in Crested Butte, Colorado... Read the rest… Continue

Field of Greens

"Last year, Googling “Houston” and “organic,” Marcella Murff found the Last Organic Outpost’s Web site. She admired the photos and the philosophy, but it was Joe’s poetry that really caught her attention — poems that praise “planting seeds of change” and “building micro-communities of living soil.” Who was this guy?

She drove to the Emile Street farm, the biggest of Last Organic’s two… Continue

A Great Day at the Garden

Yesterday, I rode to the garden on the new bike. My goal was to peek underneath the leaves of the plant I thought was an arugula, but that I now suspected was a Daikon radish.

And, sure enough, there was the white root that confirmed it as a Daikon!

Community Gardening, Natural Beauty and Timeless Motion

Yesterday, the travel bug bit and I drove up the panhandle coast of Florida to explore what some say are the best beaches in the world. I stopped at Mexico Beach and was struck by the Caribbean blue water, white sand and calmness of the area.

I picked up a couple of shells to admire. They were a bit different than the East coast shells of Miami shores.

The sand… Continue

Bicycle Commuting

Why bicycle commute? Save money on gas, relax both your sphincter and your environmental footprint, and just have fun in general. You might have reasons not to bicycle commute like “I can’t run around sweaty at work”, “It’s not feasible to ride the distance to work”, or “I’m in no shape to bicycle commute” if you don’t commute already.

With a little planning and ingenuity you too can join the ranks of the commuters or forge our own trail and be a code…

Composting

Today, McRorie Community Gardeners talked about composting. Maura said "When I was bringing my compost to the garden yesterday, I noticed a rat (I think) in the compost heap. I don't want to be supplying rats with a food source (in consideration of the neighbors, among other reasons). I'm wondering if anyone has any…

A Good Day at the Garden

The spring harvest yielded wonderful vegetables. There's a view of Sh'mal's patch in May '08. You can see the collard greens in the center, which are the hardiest veggies in the patch. Just to their right is kale. The garlic chives (three sprouts on the bottom of the photo) make for delicious additions to salads and many recipes. The Daikon radishes are huge. See the lush, soft patch of lamb's quarters near… Continue

Zoobirds Write!

We have a magic community here at Zoobird! Here are some of the things our members have written about:

Robbie, my vegan friend I met at the NW Hostel in Portland with his friend Gabby, who I hope joins Zoobird, has taught me so much about healthy food. Gabby has, too!…

The Garden ::: Chapter 2

A piece of the earth in a community garden to call my own! I was so excited. I thanked Maura and my mind filled with thoughts of how nice it was to be given the opportunity to join a community garden. I thought about what I'd do with my 20 by 2 foot strip of earth. And, I took more pictures. Then, I hopped on my bike and rode off.

As you know, my passion is travel. It opens the mind. It forces you to think beyond the normal bounds of everyday life. Travel opens…

The Garden ::: Chapter 1

Dear Sh'mal,

First of all, I want to thank you explicitly for bringing me into this beautiful world of organic gardening and all that surrounds it. Yes, I found the McRorie Community Garden on my own while wandering around SE Gainesville on my bicycle looking for the Hawthorne Trail.

And, yes I had gotten a start before I met you by talking with Daniella and Maura, our garden administrator. But, as you recall, there appeared an obstacle in the…
